NYT Op-Ed by Putnam/Campbell “Crashing the Tea Party”

An Op-Ed by Robert D. Putnam and David E. Campbell, co-authors of American Grace in today’s New York Times is getting a lot of buzz and is the most e-mailed Times story at the moment.

“Crashing the Tea Party” discusses how the Tea Party is the most disliked group of 23 groups and individuals in current poll, ranking lower than atheists or Muslims.  The Tea Party’s views are increasingly outside the mainstream of public opinion, even for many Republicans.  And the Republicans’ alliance with the Tea Party is a pact with the devil since it threatens to hijack the Republican party in the same way as George McGovern took Democrats out of the mainstream of public opinion in the 1970s.
